José is director of the Prince of Asturias Chair in Hispanic Studies at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, a position he has held since 2010. Previously, he was a professor at Dartmouth College and Michigan State University.

He has a doctorate in Hispanic Literatures from the University of California, Berkeley.

He received an MA in Comparative Literature from Stony Brook University (NY) and a BA in English Philology from the University of Salamanca.

He has published numerous books and essays on Hispanic cultural studies, film, music, literature, and popular culture.
